What does Romans 12:1-2 mean?

'Living sacrifice' is deliberately contradictory — a sacrifice was by definition dead. The offering is bodies, not sentiments, which is Paul's habit of putting devotion where it can be observed. 'Conformed' and 'transformed' are passive: you are shaped by something either way, and the only question is by what. And the promised outcome is discernment — knowing God's will is described as the result of the renewal rather than as information delivered separately.

What is the context of Romans 12:1-2?

Paul has spent the letter on sin, grace, faith and God's dealings with Israel. 'Therefore' at the start of chapter 12 is load-bearing: everything asked here rests on the mercies just described, and nothing is asked before them.
