Psalm 139:14 Explained

"I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well." — Psalm 139:14 (KJV)

Psalm 139:14 is the Bible's great statement of human dignity — every person, intricately made and fully known by God.

Context

Psalm 139 is David's meditation on God's total knowledge of him — God knows his words before he speaks, knit him together in the womb (139:13), saw his unformed body. Verse 14 is his response: praise and wonder at being so made.

What it means

'Fearfully' here means with reverence and awe — you are made in a way that inspires awe. 'Wonderfully' means set apart, distinct, marvellous. The verse grounds human worth not in achievement or appearance but in the Maker's craftsmanship. 'My soul knoweth right well' — this is something to settle deep, against every voice that says otherwise.

How to pray it

Pray this verse against shame about your body, your mind, your worth. Say: 'I am fearfully and wonderfully made.' Read the whole psalm to feel how completely you are known — and still loved.
