Colossians 3:23 Explained

"And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men." — Colossians 3:23 (KJV)

Colossians 3:23 transforms ordinary work — every task becomes worship when done 'as to the Lord.'

Context

Paul is giving household instructions (Colossians 3:18-4:1), including to servants. But the principle reaches everyone: whatever you do, the audience that matters is God, not people. It reframes drudgery as service to Christ.

What it means

'Whatsoever' — no task is excluded, however menial. 'Heartily' (ek psyches — from the soul) means wholehearted, not half-baked. 'As to the Lord, and not unto men' relocates your true employer: you ultimately work for Christ. This dignifies invisible work and removes the need for human applause.

How to pray it

Pray this verse before a task you dread or one no one will notice. Say: 'I do this for you, not for them.' Watch how working for an audience of One changes both the quality and the weight of the work.
