Lamentations 3:22-23 Explained
"It is of the LORD's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness." — Lamentations 3:22-23 (KJV)
Lamentations 3:22-23 is the bright center of the Bible's darkest book — a declaration of fresh mercy spoken from the ruins of Jerusalem.
Context
Lamentations mourns the destruction of Jerusalem in 586 BC — five poems of raw grief. In the middle of the middle poem, the writer turns: even here, God's mercies have not failed. The hymn 'Great Is Thy Faithfulness' draws its title from this verse.
What it means
The turn is stunning given the surrounding grief. 'We are not consumed' — survival itself is mercy. 'His compassions fail not' — they don't run out. 'New every morning' — each dawn brings a fresh supply, not yesterday's leftovers. This is hope chosen in catastrophe, not hope that denies it.
How to pray it
Pray this verse first thing in the morning, especially after a hard night. Receive the day's fresh mercy — not recycled, new. Say: 'Great is thy faithfulness,' even if you must say it through tears.
