What does Ruth 1:16 mean?

Four commitments, escalating: travel, lodging, people, God. The first two are logistics, the third is citizenship, the fourth is conversion — and each is harder than the last. That a Moabite says it is the point: Moabites were excluded from the assembly, and this woman ends the book as great-grandmother to David. The vow is unilateral and Naomi does not answer it.

What is the context of Ruth 1:16?

Naomi has lost her husband and both sons in Moab and is going home to Bethlehem. She tells both daughters-in-law to go back to their mothers' houses and remarry; Orpah does, sensibly. Ruth refuses, and the refusal is against her own interest in every visible way.
