What Is the Liturgical Calendar?
If you've heard of Advent or Lent but weren't sure how they fit together, the liturgical calendar is the answer. It's the Christian year — a rhythm of seasons that retells the story of Christ.
The major seasons
The year moves through Advent (waiting), Christmas (the Nativity), Lent (repentance), Holy Week and Easter (the Resurrection), and Pentecost (the birth of the Church).
Why follow it?
The calendar keeps faith from drifting into routine. Each season invites a different posture — waiting, rejoicing, repenting, celebrating — so the whole story is lived through, year after year.
Traditions differ
Protestant, Catholic and Orthodox calendars vary in dates and feasts. Our liturgical calendar guide covers the differences and 2026 dates.
