Jonah 2 is the prophet's prayer from inside the great fish — a psalm of distress, repentance and deliverance, ending with the declaration that 'salvation is of the LORD.'

Where this chapter sits
Swallowed after being thrown overboard to calm the storm his flight provoked, the prophet has not yet reached Nineveh or delivered the warning he was originally sent to speak. The prayer sits between the crisis of chapter one and the renewed commission of chapter three, so its thanksgiving looks back at a rescue already granted rather than forward to an obedience still owed. Its poetry borrows the form and vocabulary of the thanksgiving psalms.
