By this point in the book, decades have passed since Daniel's deportation, and Babylon has fallen to the Persians, with Darius now ruling. Daniel has risen to high office, which is exactly what provokes the jealousy driving the plot: rival officials, unable to fault his administration, target his religious practice instead, tricking the king into a decree he cannot later revoke. The episode closes a run of narratives before the book turns to Daniel's visions.
