Bible Verses About Grace

Grace is God's unearned favor. These verses about grace remind us that we are accepted not by our performance but by his gift.

“But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.” — James 4:6 (KJV)

God resisteth the proud but giveth grace unto the humble, quoting Proverbs to a quarrelling congregation. Grace is described as having a direction it will not flow.

“Who hath saved us, and called us with an holy calling, not according to our works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began,” — 2 Timothy 1:9 (KJV)

Grace is said to have been given before the world began, which places it prior to any behaviour. Written by a prisoner to a man tempted to be ashamed of him.

Justified freely by his grace through the redemption in Christ — freely means without cause in the recipient. The legal and the commercial images sit in one sentence.

“But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.” — Ephesians 4:7 (KJV)

Unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. The distribution is individual, which is the point of the passage on gifts that follows.

“That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” — Titus 3:7 (KJV)

“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.” — 2 Peter 3:18 (KJV)

Grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord — grace is treated as a place to develop in. It is the letter's closing instruction.

“Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;” — Hebrews 12:15 (KJV)

Lest any man fail of the grace of God, and a root of bitterness spring up. Grace missed is described as having a community consequence.

“For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.” — John 1:17 (KJV)
