Romans 10:9 Explained

"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved." — Romans 10:9 (KJV)

Romans 10:9 is one of the clearest statements of how a person is saved — confession and belief, mouth and heart, together.

Context

Paul is explaining how righteousness comes by faith, not law-keeping. He quotes Deuteronomy: the word is near you, in your mouth and heart (10:8). Verse 9 spells out what that nearness means — saving faith is both confessed aloud and believed within.

What it means

Two inseparable parts. 'Confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus' — public allegiance to Jesus as Lord. 'Believe in thine heart that God hath raised him' — inward trust in the resurrection. Heart and mouth, private and public. The resurrection is the specific content of saving belief.

How to pray it

If you have never confessed Christ aloud, do it now — say it: 'Jesus is Lord.' Then pray your belief in the resurrection honestly, doubts and all. Salvation here is not a transaction to perfect but a Person to trust.
