John 14:6 Explained

"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." — John 14:6 (KJV)

John 14:6 is one of the most consequential sentences Jesus ever spoke — a claim of exclusive access to God that has shaped Christianity for two thousand years.

Context

At the Last Supper, Jesus comforts his disciples about his coming departure (14:1-4). Thomas asks how they can know the way. Jesus' answer is not a map but himself: I am the way.

What it means

Three claims in one. Jesus is 'the way' (the path to God), 'the truth' (the reality about God), and 'the life' (the source of eternal life). The final clause makes the claim exclusive: access to the Father is through Christ. It is either the most arrogant sentence ever spoken or the most important — there is no middle reading.

How to pray it

Pray this verse when the path is unclear. Say: 'You are the way — I don't need to see the whole map, only to follow you.' Let Christ himself, not a plan, be your next step.
