Matthew 6:33 Explained

"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." — Matthew 6:33 (KJV)

Matthew 6:33 is Jesus' antidote to anxiety: reorder your priorities, and the things you worry about fall into place.

Context

Jesus has just told his hearers not to worry about food, drink and clothing (6:25-32) — the Gentiles chase these things, but your Father knows you need them. Verse 33 is the positive command that resolves the worry: seek first the kingdom.

What it means

'First' is about priority, not chronology — the kingdom comes before everything, organizing everything else under it. 'His righteousness' means living rightly under God's rule. The promise — 'all these things shall be added' — is not prosperity-gospel; it is the assurance that a life ordered around God will not lack what it truly needs.

How to pray it

Pray this verse when anxiety about provision rises. Name what you are chasing. Then say: 'I seek your kingdom first — I trust you to add what I need.' Reorder, then rest.
