Hebrews 11:1 Explained

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." — Hebrews 11:1 (KJV)

Hebrews 11:1 is the Bible's definition of faith — and the doorway into the great 'hall of faith' that follows.

Context

Hebrews was written to Christians tempted to give up under pressure. Chapter 11 answers by parading the heroes of faith — Abel, Noah, Abraham, Moses — who acted on God's promises before they saw them fulfilled. Verse 1 defines the faith they all shared.

What it means

'Substance' (hypostasis) means a firm foundation, title-deed, assurance — faith gives present reality to future hope. 'Evidence' (elenchos) means proof or conviction about what cannot yet be seen. Faith is not wishful thinking; it is acting on the reliability of God's word as if the unseen were already certain.

How to pray it

Pray this verse when you are asked to trust what you cannot see. Name the unseen thing you are hoping for. Then ask for faith that treats God's promise as the title-deed it is. Read the rest of Hebrews 11 for company.
