Evening Prayer
An evening prayer closes the day with gratitude, examination of conscience, and trust. This is a simple, traditional Christian evening prayer with a guide for praying it.
The prayer
Heavenly Father, as the day ends, I thank You for the mercies of this day — for the work I was given, the people I met, the moments I noticed Your hand. Forgive me where I failed: where I was unkind, anxious, or careless. Heal what is hurting in me, in those I love, and in this broken world. Watch over those who suffer through this night. Grant me restful sleep, that I may rise renewed to serve You tomorrow. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
History & tradition
Evening prayer is one of the oldest Christian practices — Compline (the night office) goes back to the 4th century. Across Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican and many Protestant traditions, the day's last formal prayer comes just before sleep, offering the day back to God and asking protection through the night.
When to pray it
Pray within the last half-hour before bed. If you live with family, consider praying it together. Phones off; lights dim. The point is to hand the day back to God before sleep, not to add another item to your to-do list.
Three short alternatives
Psalm 4 (a Davidic evening psalm)
'I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety' (Psalm 4:8). Read the whole short psalm. It is the original Christian goodnight.
Compline antiphon (Catholic / Anglican)
'Visit, we beseech thee, O Lord, this dwelling, and drive far from it all snares of the enemy; let thy holy angels dwell herein to preserve us in peace; and may thy blessing be upon us always. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.' Centuries old; never out of date.
The Examen (Ignatian)
Five minutes: (1) Notice God's presence. (2) Look back over the day with gratitude. (3) Notice your feelings — what God might be saying. (4) Ask forgiveness for one specific failure. (5) Look ahead to tomorrow and ask grace for it.
Pair it with daily practice
Use Quiethaven's prayer timer for five quiet minutes before sleep. Pair with the gratitude journal — three things from the day, written down, before lights out.
