What Is Repentance?

The first word of Jesus' public preaching was not "behave" or "believe harder" — it was repent: "Repent ye, and believe the gospel" (Mark 1:15). Few words are more misunderstood. Repentance is not groveling, not self-hatred, not a religious performance of sadness. The biblical word means to turn around — a change of mind that becomes a change of direction. You were walking one way; you stop, turn, and walk the other.
Repentance vs. regret
Scripture is precise about the difference: "godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death" (2 Corinthians 7:10). Regret is sorrow about consequences — being caught, looking bad, paying the price. Judas regretted. Repentance is sorrow about the thing itself, turned toward God for mercy and change. Peter wept and turned. The test is direction: regret circles the self; repentance moves toward God.
What repentance looks like in the Bible
The model prayer of repentance is David's, after his worst failure: "Have mercy upon me, O God... Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me" (Psalm 51). Notice what it contains: plain naming of sin without excuses, appeal to God's mercy rather than self-punishment, and a request for inner renewal, not just a cleaner record. The prodigal son shows the same shape in story form — he "came to himself," got up, and went home, and the father ran to meet him (Luke 15:17-20). Repentance expects a welcome, because of who the Father is.
Repentance is ongoing, not one-time
There is a decisive first turn at the start of the Christian life — "Repent, and be baptized every one of you" (Acts 2:38). But the turned life keeps making small course corrections. Luther's famous first thesis says the whole Christian life is repentance, and the apostle John agrees: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins" (1 John 1:9) — written to believers. How to repent, practically
Keep it simple and honest. Name it — specifically, to God, without the lawyer's defense ("I was tired, everyone does it"). Receive forgiveness — on the basis of Christ, not the quality of your remorse; read about grace if that feels too easy, because it felt too easy to the Pharisees too. Turn — take the one concrete step away: the apology, the deleted app, the returned money, the changed route home. Repeat as needed — without despair, because "a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise" (Psalm 51:17). Our collection of verses about repentance is a good companion for the road.
When sin keeps winning
Some patterns don't yield to private resolve — they lose power only in the light. If the same sin keeps defeating you, bring another person in: a trusted friend, or a pastor.
