Prayer for Work & Money

Requests about work and what it pays for — a job lost, a job wanted, rent due again, a debt that will not move.

Post your request

Work and money arrive together in most people's lives and they arrive together here. The job went and the rent did not. The hours were cut and the car needs fixing. The salary is fine and the mortgage is not. Splitting these into two pages would have meant asking people to choose which half of one problem to write about.

This is also the subject people are most ashamed to pray about. There is a sense that money is a worldly concern and that asking for it is somehow beneath a proper prayer. That instinct is not in the text. A great deal of scripture is about debt, wages, harvests and having enough, in plain language, without embarrassment.

You do not need to spiritualise the request before you make it. Rent is a real thing on a real date.

How people pray about work and money

The most common prayer here is short and specific: let me get this job, let the money last until the twenty-eighth, let them not send the letter. Specific prayers are good prayers. Vagueness is often a way of protecting yourself in advance from an answer you would recognise as a no.

Alongside that, people pray about the dignity of it. Long unemployment does something to a person that has nothing to do with money — the slow conviction of being surplus, the difficulty of answering what do you do at a party. Praying about that is not self-pity, and it is frequently the heavier half.

And some of the honest prayer here is about wanting. Not everyone praying about money is short of it; some are asking to be freed from a kind of wanting that has not made them happy. Both are welcome, and neither should look down on the other.

Before an interview
God, I have prepared as well as I can and I want this more than I would like to admit. Let me be myself in that room rather than a nervous version of someone else. If it is not this one, do not let me take it as a verdict on my worth. Amen.
When the money will not stretch
Lord, I have gone through the numbers again and they do not work. I am tired of doing sums at midnight. Show me what to do next, even if it is something I have been avoiding. And keep the fear of this from making me a worse person to live with. Amen.
After a long stretch without work
Father, it has been months and the applications go nowhere. I am starting to believe the silence means something about me. Keep that from settling in. Give me one thing this week that goes right, and the will to get up and try again tomorrow. Amen.

What helps besides praying

Questions people ask

Is it wrong to pray for money?
No. The idea that material requests are unspiritual does not survive contact with the text — the prayer most Christians say daily asks for bread and for debts. Ask for what you need in plain words.
Does God promise financial blessing if I have enough faith?
That is a claim this page will not make. It is not supported by the text and its cost falls on the people it fails, who are then told the shortfall was their own belief. Faithful people lose jobs and houses. It is not a verdict on them.
Should this be about work or about money?
Either, and usually both. The hub was merged on purpose because the two arrive together for most people. A request about a job you hate belongs here as much as one about a bill you cannot pay.
Can I ask for financial help on this page?
No, and requests that do are removed. This is a prayer wall, not a fundraising platform, and allowing appeals would make it a target within a week. Ask for prayer, and take the practical side to a debt service or a church that can assess it properly.
